So I went out for a gallon of milk and....
« on: November 16, 2006, 01:19:00 pm »
Ok so I was actually on my way home from work, going down the freeway, and my 80 c10, which I've had for a week, decides to blow a head gasket.  I was 6 miles from home and had to limp the truck home.

I get it into my dad's garage, and we start tearing the engine apart.  Turns out that I had a blown head gasket, two cracked cylinder heads, and an intake manifold that was an eighth of an inch from corroding through it.

The entire bottom end seemed fine.  There was a bunch of carbon buildup on the old heads, and on the pistons, but that all got taken care of.  The pistons were cleaned up real well, and a brand new set of heads were put on.  I then went out and got an edelbrock Performer intake manifold.

The heads went on last night, and all the pushrods and rockers bolted back up.  The head was then torqued down.  Tonight, we get the intake manifold on, the carb, and for an added touch, new plug wires, fuel filter, cap and rotor, spark plugs, air filter, and a fresh oil change along with a radiator flush.  Oh, and my good buddy shaved80 from this forum is giving me a set of long tube headers for free.

I'm hoping all these new parts and a clean engine are gonna give me a significant amount of power now!

I hope your bearings are ok, Coolant does nasty things to bearings. Get any in the oil? Alittle might be alright, but you only drove 6 miles. How does it run?

I didn't get the truck from him, I traded my bagged nissan for this truck from some kid out here.  He just posted about the good news when I told him!

I really am hoping the bearings are ok too.  There wasn't hardly any in the oil, mostly in the lifter valley and up around the heads.

It's entirely possible I could start it up tonight or tomorrow and find out that the bottom end is gone, but I'm hoping that won't be the case!

It's all back together.  Gonna get the new fluids in it, and get a new engine temp sensor, and I'm good to go!
