tranny trans case question
« on: March 19, 2009, 05:20:21 pm »
Hey,
First I would like to say that i am new to this site and i think it kicks ass. I have looked for a site like this for months now and finally found this one. Anyways, for my problem. I have a 79 K-10 with a 350/350/203. I am not sure I like the idea of having the full time four wheel drive. I have done some looking on here and was wondering if a tranfer case swap would be better or if i should just get the mile marker kit for my 203. Also is the 350 tranny a good transmission compared to the 700R4. I will be using the truck as my daily driver and for huntin/hauling/farm truck(what a truck is usually used for). If i see something that looks like a bit of fun off road i will prolly go through it too but nothing serious. Any info you guys got for me would be great. Like i said I'm new to this site and to the world of classic Chevy's so I dont know what i would like to bout my truck.
Thanks,
Billy

79chevy welcome i am going to swap to a th400 and a 205 transfercase now i went thorgh the same thing you are i do not like the 203 because of full time you can get the mile marker kit and it be a easy swap or get a 205 the 700r4 is better then the 350 from what i heard

this might help you with your decision

thanks for the info. I the only thing i am still debating is whether or not i like the idea of having the ability to have a low gear in 2 wheel drive, which i would get by putting the mile marker kit in my 203. Also which transmissions have overdrive in them as i will be driving my truck to work everyday which is a 10 mile trip one way. so having overdrive would be a big money saver. how good is the 400 i dont know much bout that transmission, and all i have heard bout the 700R4 is bad so i am still confused bout that part.

hmmm i am not sure on the overdrive but i think the 700r4 has it but for the other transmissions you could add a adaptor and for the th400 it is supposed to be bullet proof like the 205 ;D

My personal opinion is the over drive is great for milage, but ten miles the over drive is not going to save you any $ worth worrying about. The other thing you is if its not highway driving, or allot of up and down grades you will be leaving it in drive anyway. Over drive is no good at all if you are not going to be cruising the whole way at 50 / 55 MPH. or more. A TH 350 is a great transmission for what you described. I run one in my Blazer have since 97, I have wheeled it for years. It lived behind a mild big block in my 74 Malibu before that, I drove it like I stole it most of the time. It was in a C 10 behind an HO 305 for a few years before my Malibu. It was rebuilt before it went into the C 10, but it has never been opened up since I owned it.
As far as the kit they work fine. I have never installed one but have had a couple running driving parts trucks that have had them. Again for what you are using the truck for it would be fine. I personally would swap in a 205.
Some people are like Slinkies. Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs

hotrod24, blazin,
thanks for the info. i have decided to get the kit and stick with what i got. now i just need to pull the motor, trans, trans case, and tear apart. i am gonna rebuild the motor and beef it up a little bit. also i need to go through the transmission and figure out where my fluid is leaking and i might put a mild shift kit in it now that im stickin with a th350. and one quick question bout the transfer case kit. when i am in 4wheel drive would it still be locked or what, just not sure how that would work.
