More exhaust questions!
« on: April 06, 2009, 08:00:53 pm »
Hello!  First time post, but I'm sure I'll get some answers.  I've found lots just by searching for previous questions.  I've got 2 trucks, both chevy 1/2 4wds.  One is 77 with 350 engine, 350 auto (400 and 400 were replaced long before i bought the truck), and t-case is a new process 203?  Hubs are always locked, can't remember the exact number.  Anyway, I put long tube headers on (cheapies from Checkers) because the stock manifolds were cracked.  When I put the headers in they ended a short distance from the transmission crossmember, and had to have an "S" put in on both sides to clear it (can't remember if it was above or below the crossmember).  A local exhaust shop did that and replaced the rest of the exhaust later down the road due to rust.  This truck had duals and no cats when I bought it.
Now that I bored you with that, here's my question....
I recently bought my 2nd chevy which is an 86 with 350 (originally a 305) and manual.  This has the lockable hubs.  This has a Y-pipe and no cats (I'm sure that's not stock) and single exhaust back to just before the axle and dumps there.  I bought some Flowtech 11500's from a local shop here thinking I'll just throw these on and take it to a shop to have the rest done.  I didn't think about the lack of cats, and no one will touch it.  I live in South Dakota, so there are no emissions tests, so I'd like to stay without cats.  I thought about just buying an exhaust system from Summit and installing it myself, but are these trucks similar enough where these headers are going to end up right at the crossmember like on my 77?  If that's the case I'm guessing I'm going to have to bite the bullet and put cats on it so I can have an exhaust shop do the work.
Sorry for the long dull story, but I just wanted to try and get all the info out in the first shot :)

If those flowtech's are just like the Dynomax headers, Jeg's/Summit Racing/etc carries a dual exhaust kit for about $130. Add mufflers and you can get it done for cheaper than going to a shop, not to mention having to buy a pair of cats.
