REAL new guy question
« on: May 04, 2009, 09:13:53 pm »
so since im new to this whole truck and 4x4 world i dont really have any idea about how to work my 4 wheel drive. i have a 79 k10 and was told i have a 203 t-case (that right?) i took it off roadin a little this weekend and when i got back to our cabin i put the truck and t-case in neutral and unlocked my hubs and parked the truck. (thats what ive been told to do) then i went to drive it later and it wouldnt budge.(t-case still in neutral) do i have to have the t-case engaged all the time? if so what gear? hi, lo, hi loc, lo loc? thanks in advance for the info guys.

i am guessing at this, (pretty sure tho) others feel free to chime in and correct as necessary)

if you have the 203 transfer case, i think that was for full time 4x4.   but you have hubs, which means a conversion kit may have been put on.   i am guessing at this.  the full time 4x4 is exactly that, you can't select 2wd, always in 4x4.  the conversion kit allows you to convert your full time 4x4 to a part time 4x4, so you are able to select 2wd, as well as 4x4.   there are also high and low ranges in 4x4 (the hi, lo, hi loc, lo loc positions)

on the road, you should have your truck in the "hi" range.    shift your transfer case into hi, should drive just fine.

bigkat79,

"i put the truck and t-case in neutral and unlocked my hubs and parked the truck."

Hopefully you were parked on level ground with a decent parking brake or a good wheel chuck.

The transfer case has to be engaged.  Hi (no reduction or (Lo, approx 2:1 reduction.   Hi loc or Low loc will lock lock up the internal diff in the transfer case, again lo-loc 2:1 reduction.

i definitely was, espescially since my truck doesnt hold ground when in park, i get a ticking sound and the truck rolls if its not on level ground while in park. but thats another thread i have floating around here...

so i need to be in 4 hi loc with the hubs open to drive in 2wd right? what happens if im in 4 hi with the hubs open instead of loc?

they make a kit to convert your full time to part time. to see if you have it put it in 4 hi unlock and move forword and have someone look at your front drive shaft to see if it moves also make sure your hubs are unlocked at this time or your drive shaft will turn no mater what . but when you park keep in in lock or unlock i would keep it in unlock this will keep the rear diff. in gear if you leave the trans in gear.its OK to drive it with the hubs unlock and the t case unlocked. hi-lock will turn the front drive shaft with the rear one "lock" and unlock will only turn the rear shaft
