4x4 shifting a 79 gmc k2500
« on: May 06, 2009, 08:53:05 pm »
Hello everyone first post here and I come with a problem sorry to say.

I just bought a 1979 GMC K2500 with a automatic transmision. I tested the 4 wheel drive before I bought it and everything seemed to work fine. Only paid 1200 for the old truck and its in good health for a truck of it's age. But here's the thing. I cant get her to back into Low lock or even High lock. I can shift the 4 wheel drive selector between High and low but when it comes to high lock and low lock it just wont shift.

It worked when I bought it I know for a fact it did. I took the truck into the mud for some time before buying it. It was diffacult for me to shift into low or high lock but the guy that owned it told me I didn't have it in neutral and adjusted the shifter a bit and then he was able to shift it into the low lock and high lock positions no problem.

I am locking the hubs putting it in neutral and then trying to make the selection I want but to no avail. Am I missing something here I know it works and would hate to have to take it to a tranny shop for this but I'm about to that point.

Sounds like the linkage is either gummed up or out of adjustment.

The bolt in the linkage broke a short time after I purchased the truck. Guess it was from me trying to shift it into 4 high lock. Is there anything you would recomend in loosening the linkage up? Maybe some WD40 or something of that nature sprayed into the 4 wheel drive shift  linkage?

WOW! I put some 3 in 1 Oil on the linkage and Wham! All gears available! It's amazing what a little 3 in 1 will do Saved me a couple of hundred bucks. Never figured this would work but man this thing is shifting like butter now. I am truely amazed at this!
