Weight for Traction, how much?

So my 86 C-10 is my first 2WD truck, and I gotta say, I am amazed by the lack of traction this thing has in the snow. It like less than an inch of snow and the rear tires are just spinning. Nevermind ice. I didn't think it would be this bad. So was gonna grab a bunch of bricks from some demolition my buddy is doing at his shop, but was wondering, how much weight do you guys usually put back there?

put the bricks on top of the snow and drive on them.  

Good tires on the rear will take you anywhere you want to if you drive it smart.  But, to answer your question, I usually put firewood back there or bags of sand (cheap at Lowe's)--mayb 300-400 lbs.  You can always break open a bag of sand if you get stuck and lay some down, it will give you good traction.

Oh yea forgot to mention tires, running a set of Cooper discovery snows on all 4 that came with the truck. The rears are kinda dried out looking and the tread is a little low. I'll switch them around once I have a working air compressor again. I don't really drive the truck much right now, got a little Civic beater. But when I do need it its useless once I hit a little snow.

You shouldn't have that much trouble, I drove my '83 swb through three northern MO winters with VERY worn summer tread tires, and never once got stuck, nor did I add any weight aside from my toolbox, which added 110-700 lbs, depending on how loaded it was..generally on the lighter side in the winter, as I didn't want to dig most of my tools out of the snow.

speaking of....
They are calling for up to 18" in the southern Shenandoah Valley, near Roanoke, Va Fri night and saturday.  Calling for a few inches here in Richmond.  Getting my 4x4 ready in case we get more.
