whats the range on 1 of 2 gas tanks?

so my truck is supposed top have dual tanks but the guy i bought it from took off the pass side tank because it leaked, and my gas gauge doesnt work right now so i was just wondering if anyone here knew how far i could drive before running out of gas... its got a 350, edelbrock carb, man trans.

No way to tell but if it is a short bed you have 16 gallon tanks, long bed will have either.
If you figure 10mpg you can go 160 miles

 I'm not a math expert but I would say that 1 tank would get you half of the distance that 2 tanks would.
 I would agree with Captkaos. Assume you get 10MPG's and go from there.
 You can get under the truck and knock on the tank to tell when you are getting low, try to run it down (but not out) so you can tell the size of the tank when you fill it.
 It wouldn't hurt to carry a gas can with you until you get the feel for your truck.

I always carried a 5gal can with me when I only had one tank. Definitely got me fixing the other side real quick.

 yeah i actually have a 5 gal "peace of mind can" already, lol. and i figure i get about 10mpg too, maybe less. just wasnt sure on the size of the tank, 16 gallons sounds right, guess ill find out soon, haha. oh and i already knock it before i drive to make sure its got some gas. i get some weird looks at my apt. for sure.

i put a bike lock through the handle and through one of the stake pockets to secure mine.    it's not thick, but it's a deterrent...

My truck is missing the driver side tank. Since I haven't really gone far with it anyway, I haven't really worried about the reduced capacity.
However, if I set up the truck as a light-sport airplane transport, I'll want some of that range back. I'll have to figure whether I want to just replace the missing tank (cheapest *real* install) or convert to a 'burban tank. Mine's a long bed.
Then again, I'll probably have a fair-to-middling sized fuel storage tank in the bed for alcohol-free airplane gas anyway. That'd certainly work as an emergency supply, too.

I agree with Capt... no way to tell. Aftermarket carb, jets, adjustments etc...

I would suggest figuring mileage first. Fill tank run about 100 miles... don't top off. Run another 100 miles or so and note the gallons needed to refill (at the same pump) divided into the miles run. Do this at least 3 or 4 times and average the miles per gallon. Then take the miles per gallon x 16 for a short bed and you have some idea.

I do this for my late model daily drivers to determine mpg. The key is using the same pump and averaging a few fill-ups.

When I had my old '74, it had two fully functional tanks, and I never ran out of gas. I'd alternate filling one and running off the other. Working for my Dad, it was sometimes tough to afford fuel (yeah, even with sub-$1 fuel prices), but I always made sure there was fuel in the "other" tank.

I never checked the fuel mileage of that truck... was scared to.

My 86 2wd gets in the 10 - 11 mpg range.  That is with a crate 350, edelbrock 600 carb, dual exhaust, turbo 350 trans, and 2:73 gears.  Keep in mind, most of my trips are short, very little highway.
