non lockup TC in an unplugged lockup trans, will it hurt?
« on: June 23, 2010, 08:18:39 pm »
Ok other then gas mileage, will running a non lockup torque convertor, in a lockup th350 that will NOT be plugged in, hurt anything?

I ask because the long tail th350 I'm considering is said to be from a mid 80's truck which would be lockup, if stock I guess and unknown if tc comes with it or not, and would probably be cheaper to buy non lockup tc, then a lockup style.

The truck is an 84 and it currently has a th350 but it is NOT lockup style, I beleive it to have been changed before.

I don't think so. My 700r4 Isn't hooked up and my trans guy said it wasn't really necessary. But he's also rebuilt my trans for free for stupid things too....
77 c-10 - 77 400 86 700r4 "Emmy"
83 citation - 2.5L Four on the Floor!
88 sierra - reman 350 700r4 "Eleanor"
All normal practicality and rational money handling goes out of the window when it comes to my truck.

LOl I heard that, yea we had an 86 k10 with a 700r4 that had a lockup tc I guess, but the plugin was not hooked up to it. Later on I plugged it in, but it made no difference.

I think the torque converters are different between the lock up and nonlockup versions beyond the obvious (lockup).

yea I found my answer on google, appearantly you can NOT even put a non lockup tc in a lockup trans. they won't go together right.

So now if the guys trans is lockup, I gotta make sure he's got the TC, or buy one.

you definitely need the converter.  If he isn't selling it with the trans I wouldn't get it or ask for a discount.  Last I checked those converters were high new.

yes sir they still are, only lockup tc for a 350c I can find is on ebay for $135, next to that is like tci and b&m stall lockups for $200+.

The guy wrote me back and does have a converter that goes with it, so we should be good to go.
