'85 windshield wiper/pump problem
« on: September 24, 2010, 10:38:12 pm »
My wipers are extremely slow. They work fine on the highest setting but either way they seem slow as it is. Also, when I try to use the squirter nothing comes out. I've looked on the washer fluid tank and there is nothing that looks like a pump that goes into the tank. Basically there's a line that comes out of the tank, goes around into a tee, one line goes to the driver's side, the other to the passenger side and that's it. I haven't pulled the cowl panel off because I'm not sure how. Looks like 4 small bolts and I gotta figure out how to take the wiper arms off. Would there be a pump inside the cowl area? I'm debating buying a stock replacement pump but I think it goes directly into the tank, right? The wiper motor is mounted to the firewall I believe? From what I've read it seems there are two types, the type that has the motor and pump in one, and the type that has the pump in the tank and the motor elsewhere. Thanks.

are they slow on high? if so I say the motor is bad and the pump should be in the washer fluid tank if it was in the motor the washer lines would run from the pump to the nozzles I don’t think it was an option for your year make sure your getting power to the pump also and your lines not cracked. the wiper comes off by sliding a tab at the bottom of the wiper arm out then with a little force it slides off. a little tip when you put the new motor on before you hook the plate that goes to the wiper arms on cycle the motor with the wiper switch and wait for it to stop moving. if you don’t do this the motor could be not at home when you turn it on for the first time causing the wiper blades to not to reach fully across the windshield and then come crashing back into the cowl to try and find home

They seem about normal on high. It could just be me, but these wipers are extremely slow compared to my other vehicles. I don't see a pump anywhere and I looked at what the replacement pumps look like, I haven't seen anything like that under the hood so that's why I asked if it is possible that it is mounted under the cowl panel.
Could it be possible that perhaps someone just got rid of the washer pump altogether? I don't see why they would run the lines then, but when I got the truck the windshield washer bottle was bone dry. I try to switch it on and the wipers run like they should, but nothing comes out.

the wiper has been slow. I drove a '98 corolla that was almost faster than it on the low setting. It remained so even after replacement due to the motor dying.

the pump is in the washer reservoir if you trace the lines into the reservoir you will see it. try to time the pulse of the arms and report that

Here's a pic of the line into the washer bottle. It does not appear to have any kind of pump, and the bottle doesn't look like it has anything into it except fluid.

This is a connector that is going underneath the bottle, I don't know if it is related. There also is a rubber hose that is just laying there, don't know if it goes to it or not.

This is a pic of what I think is the wiper arm motor. The washer hose looks like it goes into the motor but it doesn't, it just runs around it on the firewall.

This is the hose tee, one side looks like it goes to the passenger wiper, the other the driver's side, and the middle goes to the washer bottle, and it looks like it directly goes to the bottle. No pump or anything inline with that hose.

I'll pull the tank off, I did not know the pump was under it so I'll check and see. I'll spray out all the lines with air and see if it helps, but I might want to just replace the pump just in case since they aren't much money. When I hit up the junkyard on the half off sale I'm going to buy another wiper motor just to see if there is any difference.

The wipers on my 79 were really slow when I got it. I oiled the pivot points under the cowl screen and kept working them and oiling some and they freed up and work well now. If you wiper motor is going bad sometimes it will work fine and then just stop after a few minutes. The motor gets old and it gets hot and stops. After it cools down it will work again.
