Drivetrain 'roar'
« on: September 30, 2010, 12:39:14 pm »
Does anyone else experience a hollow 'roaring' sound in lower gears, especially when first accelerating or coming to a stop? My truck has always done this and I have never understood why. I have a 305 and a TH350 auto with a 10-bolt rear. I have replaced the u-joints in the driveshaft, and the tranny seals are new and is kept full of fluid, none of which solved the problem. Like I said, it only happens when accelerating from or right before coming to a stop or when rolling at a very low speed and only when in 1st gear. The 'pitch' of the roar seems to descend as the speed lowers and ascend as it speeds up, then disappears after shifting to 2nd...almost makes it sound like a school bus. It's never caused a real mechanical problem in the 10 years I've had it, it's just annoying. I've often wondered if it's tranny related or if it's in the rear end, as I cannot pinpoint the location of the noise (since the truck has to be moving when it happens).

Just bought an '84 Silverado a few weeks ago and I have the EXACT same thing happening. Runs great, shifts great, just has a roar or "whining" when accelerating or coming to a stop. Just like the previous post, I can't tell if its the tranny or the rear end. Hope someone can shed some light on this.

I've just realized mine does this too after getting an exhaust on it. I never paid any mind to it, but I am curious now...

All normal practicality and rational money handling goes out of the window when it comes to my truck.
