auto to manual swap
« on: December 15, 2010, 09:29:30 am »
i have n 87 r 10 305 tbi with four on the floor. the body is junk. i have found an 83 cab and chasey that is rust free for 400 bucks. so i am thinking about buying this cab and chasey and puting engine tranny and my posi rear into this 83. only two problems with this is that the truck had an auto trans in it and it is set up for carb. not tbi. i think if im right all i have to do to make the trans fit in i cut a hole in the floor pan, but i dont know what i have to do to put the clutch parts in it? and it has a hydrolic clutch also. any thought or coments would help!! ::)

question, i have a newer 454 that i have in a 79 gmc dually that i am parting out. could i put the trany and rear out of my 87 and put this 454 in it without changing any thing like the clutch? the 83 is set up for carburated and the old ignition system like the 454 has on it, so i think that i can just drop the 454 right in and bolt the trans out of the 87 with a 305 with no problems, right?? im a newbie, and just turned 18 and this is my first major project.

the motor yes.  The rear end won't bolt in unless your 87 is a dually.
The trans unless it has been rebuilt won't live behind the 454 with alot of abuse.

the truck that i am building is not a dually. i think that i can just unbolt the rear out of the 87 and roll it under the 83 and hook everything back up to this posi. the trans out of the 87 that has a 305 with it should bolt up to the 79 454 engine, right?  ??? would the flywheel and clutch off of the 305 fit on the 454 or do i have to use the one on the 454? the clutch on the 454 is blown, and the one on the 305 is almost new. trying to be cheep aslo! ::)

Is the 83 a single rear wheel or dual?
Transmissions will swap BBC to SBC and vice versa
If they are both manuals, the flywheel on a 454 is NOT the same as a SBC, you need to have it resurfaced and I would not use the one off the 350.
Being cheap on a clutch is not a good idea especially if cheap only lasts you 5 months and you have to pull it out again.  I had a clutch last 5 years on a daily driver and it was still good when I sold it...

X2 on this.

Buy a good new clutch not a rebuilt and never look back. It will be cheaper in the long run.

Give me a long enough lever and a place to stand, and I shall move the earth or break this bolt...Whatever, just hold my beer!

the 305 truck had a new one put in it and was drove mabey 3000 miles, and then has sat for the past 9 years until this spring, could i just bolt the 305 fly wheel to the 454 with no problems? and it is a single wheel on the 305. the 84 truck fizzeled out, found an 79 that has new cab corners and rockers and front fenders for 350, like that look better and is in a little beter shape i think.
