stearing column
« on: July 08, 2011, 10:22:14 pm »
ok the column in my truck is showing its age.  to take the key out most of the time i have to lift up on the gear shifter, also the turn signals and hazards just went as well.  a friend of mine said i need to either rebuild mine or replace it what all would i need in parts to rebuild it?  its an auto column.  i printed out already how to rebuild one from here.

you can pick one up from the junk yard for about 25. but about the key i think (not sure) but you might be able to adjust the linkage at the trans for that. someone else should chime in. the turn and hazards should both go out at the same time if they do it most time a ground or bulbs.

Rebuild it....
After you try to get one from a junk yard, you'll have to rebuild it anyway....
The switches (turn signal/hazard and Wiper) are plastic, and if yours is shot, I would not expect one from a junk yard to have much better switches...

need to clear up what i said i confused myself lol. but about the turns and hazards i cant see both going out at the same time being the turn signal cam its a bad connection at the socket bulbs or fuses or even the pigtail on the column but if the cam gets replaced most time its just cause somethings wrong with the self canceling mechanism

Ok, here is what it did.  The one turn signal light in the dash would stay on so it was taken out.  Not long after that I lost the turn signals, hazards and horn.  At first I thought it was a fuse that blew, but I didn't see a bad one. Friend said it's in the column, replace it.

all going out sounds like a connection issue in the pigtail thats the only place i can think of that they are all connected. but the turn signal light being on usually is from feedback due to a bad ground

Ok I changed the fuse for the flashers tonight.  They worked for a few minutes.  The horn I'm going to disconnect the air horn and hook up the factory horn back up and see if that works.  The 4 ways still don't work.
