Need a new valve cover tube
« on: May 02, 2011, 10:34:28 pm »
I need a new tube for the valve cover on my 87 5.7L. Its that tube on the driver's side that plugs into the valve cover, and runs into the... I don't know the throttle body I think. Its black plastic and its L shaped. Sorta. Anyway, I don't think I'm just going to be able to go to the chevy dealer and pick one up at the parts counter. Or anywhere else. So what would you make one out of? Perhaps there is some kind of easy way I can fab one up real quick? Be nice to have a quick and easy fix.

I would try to get one before you figure you can't get one. If the parts stores don't have them what about a salvage yard?
Some people are like Slinkies. Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs

That would be a PCV valve. I just bought one 3 days ago from Oreillys.

Not sure if its actually the PCV valve itself. Maybe it connects to it? If it is its a really long pcv valve.

EDIT:

Guess you're right. Mine is something like this, but has much more of a curve in the middle.

Yeah I'll try to get a pic a little later when I get back home. The pic you posted yeah that is a PCV valve. But I'm needing the tube, not the valve itself. The tube on the truck has broken at the valve cover where it goes in, and I want to get another one cause I don't want road dust and dirt to be able to make its way into the open hole in the valve cover.

It kind of sounds like you're talking about the pcv pipe to the breather, and not the pcv valve's hose.  Is this broken "thing" as big around as your thumb or smaller than your pinky?  It should go to the breather and not the throttle body if that's the case.

if its METAL it goes to the breather, it would be on the passenger side. the pcv valve is plastic and if its anything more than an L shape then the PO put a weird one on there.

Here are the pics. I see now that I should have said that its on the driver's side and not the passenger side. The PVC valve and its tube are on the passenger side. They are both there doing their job just fine. But as you can see, this curved tube is broken down at the bottom, where its actually supposed to plug into its little fitting in the valve cover. The broke part is the little yellowish part at the bottom in the pic. The other part where it connects to the throttle body is just fine. That would be the larger rubber tube part near the top.

Hmm I'm pretty sure that IS the pcv valve. You can get a "performance" one that looks like a little push in breather, or the stock looking one. 2$-5$. Oriellys, autozone, etc.

I'll look at those pics on a comp when I get home...

No the PCV valve is on the opposite valve cover. I looked at it, and I saw its tube and the PCV valve itself. It looks exactly like the tube shown in all the little parts catalogs online. This other one must be called something else. I'll take a pic of the PCV valve on the other side and show what it looks like too.

I'm just going to take it to the chevy dealer and make them order me one.
