I found a q-jet
« on: August 26, 2011, 07:50:24 pm »
So I was cleaning some stuff up in the shop and I found a carb.  I do recall that it is from the 350 that was in my 1970 GMC before the engine went, after that a 2 barrel was put in with the new engine......don't ask why.

The old engine was rebuilt, the previous owner had claimed about 350 hp.  I don't know any more details other than it was a 350 bored out to become a 355.

So here are a few pics, I'm curious if anyone could give me a bit more info on this from the pics.  I'm wondering if it's something to toss or would I be able to rebuild and use it on the 454 in my 1986?

There is what is called a list number on the side of the main body that will tell you the exact application it was originally made to go in.  As long as the intake has provisions for that kind of choke set up, you should just need to jet it for the engine size.  I have a guy with the Rochester book that I could get you the application however he is in the hospital.

Thanks!

I'll have another look at it, I didn't notice any other numbers when I was taking the pictures.

The numbers are on the front drivers side on the main body going up and down.

I would look for something with an electric choke as you won't be so limited on intake choice.

Can he convert it to electric choke? Or is it easier to just find one?

looks like a 4MV series carb like mine. im gonna guess and say it'd work on a 454, with a lot of jetting. you can easily convert the choke to electric. i've seen kits for like 40$

My rochester book did not have those numbers listed, though it does have a table for cfm and bore size.  It says for a 454 you need a carb with 600 - 800 cfm.
For a Quadrajet the identification numbers are stamped into the main body casting adjacent to the throttle linkage.

Been busy lately, so I never got a chance to have a second look at it.

I'll try to remember to dig it out tomorrow and check for more numbers.

He hasn't shown the correct numbers yet...The numbers to find are vertical on the lump Left side of the carb just above the secondary linkage/shaft. The hook on the rod in this picture is pointing at them ;) Lorne

I have seen parts listed for a divorced choke set up but I have never been ale to buy one. If you want this carb and electric choke I wouldn't waste any money until I had the electric choke conversion in hand.
IMO I wouldn't bother as the divorced choke conversion would cost as much as a used q-jet that has the regular newer version of the hot air choke(easily converted to electric) or an electric choke. actually I would just buy a holley and say goodbuy to carb headaches.

Well it's been decided, I'm just getting a rebuilt Q-jet.  Stock for my motor.

Said they would take this one for the core exchange too.

I'm doing my propane to gasoline conversion soon so I didn't want to fool around looking for too many parts.  Just want to get it done and over with.

New intake, exhaust, carb, distributer/coil and other little bits.

Also figure it's a good time to replace leaky gaskets like the valve covers and timing chain cover.

Maybe I'll take some pics as I go and post them up after.

Thanks for the input everyone!
