speedo removal
« on: September 22, 2011, 03:02:18 pm »
So now that I've figured out the wrong way to remove the speedo needle & face (break the needle spindle), can anyone tell me how to do it properly?  Now I not only still want to remove the speedo, but I probably need to replace it (unless there's another way to get the needle back on there).
I removed the trip odometer button head & the two screws holding the face, but couldn't get the needle off.  Once the needle broke off, I still couldn't see how to remove it.
I got it to this point;

Are you trying to get it off so you can remove the blue dash light assembly?

the speedo should come out with 2 screws and a clip on the back of the cluster.  It looks like it is still in the truck, you have to remove it to get the speedo out as a unit.  That way you can get to the connection at the back...  But you have to remove the cable also.

I had the guy at my local speedometer shop replace my needles(speedo and gas). when he did this (I watched) he reached behind the dash-unhooked the cable and somehow was able to remove the speedometer without removing the cluster. the speedometer did require recalibration. Your local salvage yard may be your best option If you don't have a speedometer shop in your area otherwise this (to me) is one of the jobs that someone with experience makes it quick easy and cheap.

The speedometer sticks out the back of the blue cluster and there is a clip back there that will release it from the speedometer cable.  You can then remove the whole blue cluster.  I was able to get a hand back there to release it--seem to remember it was on the top side.  It's a good time to lube your speedometer cable or replace it.  The speedometer cable goes through the firewall and I was able to pull it a bit to get some room to stick my hand back there.

The needle is pressed on. You can gently wiggle it off if you are paitent and carful. Problem is remembering the exact postion to put it back on.
