Turning the tires.
« on: November 29, 2011, 12:44:44 pm »
Hi everyone,
I will start off by saying that i know that the best way to tell the gear ratio is popping the lid and checking the numbers on the ring. But theres several videos out there that have a technique of lifting the rear end of the ground, set the tranny in neutral and spin the tires 10 times, you count the times the shaft spins in the 10 tire rotations and divide by 10. How true is this?

That technique will get you close but you will have to spin both tires at the same time.

I tried it before checking if someone answered and i figured i did something wrong. Spun one tire and the shaft didn't spin but the other tire spun counterwise, blocked the other tire from spinning and spun the tire again and i only got the shaft spinning for 18 times for 10 times on the tire. I don't think a 14 bolt FF has a 1.8 gear ratio.
I will try it again spinning both tires at the same time.

You have a 3.73 then if I am thinking how the spider gears are spinning.

If the truck is new to you and you don't know if the gear oil has been replaced/flushed, why not take the opportunity now and do it and then you will know 100% what ratio it is.
