Help needed-'86 Washer pump
« on: January 17, 2012, 01:57:57 pm »
Guys, A friend is working on a '86 Military spec truck. The windshield washer pump is bad. The pump is on the motor like the older trucks, not on the bottle like normal. Is this the same pump as the '80 & back trucks? Anybody have a good part number at the local NAPA, Autozone, ect.? Thanks, Lorne

It should be the exact same as a 1986 non mil-spec.   The wiring harness I pulled out of a mil-spec, hooked directly to the non mil washer pump.

     New bottles are cheap.

Well, that's interesting...It's at my friend's shop. I haven't studied this truck (I did see/walked around it) before he started working on it. Definitely has the pump on the wiper motor & the harness isn't butched is what he's telling me. Of coarse he ordered an '86 pump first (not thinking/knowing where the pump is, was & should be) & got the one with the O-ring seal to go into the bottle...that's when I got "the phone call".
Another thing that is slightly odd is that the front wheelwells are held in with 5/16" bolts & J-clips, not the metric stuff. Sure somebody along the way could have changed these things but it seems unlikely. This looks like a slightly beat, but unmolested truck. 6.2 Diesel, ect.
I guess I'm going to suggest a pre-'81 pump & see if that matches? Lorne

When I looked-up your information I got the one on the bottle too!  What I do know is that NAPA sells an electronic version of the washer pump on the wiper motor now.  It is WAY better than the old mechanical one with the cam off of the wiper gear!!! It also looks nearly identical to the stock one except that it doesn't have the suction head at the top, you just see an electric pump motor sticking out of the top. I think if you got an earlier one you would be just fine.
