83 C10 died while driving and now no spark...
« on: November 29, 2016, 11:00:32 pm »
Hello all this is my first post.  I have an electrical issue.  I have an 83 C10 with a 350/700rf.  I've only owned it a month.  Today I changed the valve cover gaskets and exhaust manifold gaskets as well as the hard to reach spark plug that hides directly my passenger side header.  I took it out for a test drive and when I put it in drive the truck moved about 8 feet then lost all power.  Now, the engine just turns and does not start.  I troubleshot down to no spark so I changed the coil....still no spark.  Ive read in other threads that it could be the ignition starter switch (not the ignition cylinder).  I was wondering if anyone here has changed it before and what the steps were and if possible, the part number.  Thanks!!

Assuming it has an HEI distributor I would say it's most likely the MODULE that sits under the rotor.

The ignition switch is on the column from memory at least in the model years I own.
The key switch has a rod that runs down the column and activates the actual electrical switch.
Did you check for voltage at the terminal under the cap ?

If not check that and come back and report.

It's the one that the power wire attaches to the other wires would be from the distributor base.

Check the line drawing below.
It's the one that indicates battery,

If this does not look like the distributor cap on your truck the wrong path going down I'm taking you.

You mentioned you replaced the coil, if this type of setup isn't the same as the coil you installed it's not the same setup.
