New home (almost)
« on: April 21, 2012, 02:36:46 am »
In previous postings, I have mentioned that we're being relocated.

Well, we just got back from a house hunting trip and have located a very suitable house with 1 1/2 acres.  Included is a 30'x40' enclosed, insulated, lighted and wired pole barn with 110V and 220V. The house is small, but almost new. It's basically move in ready. There's an awesome yard for the kids and it'll be a short drive to work. We made an offer, they accepted and we're set to close in a month and really stoked about the new place (as long as it passes all inspections)...

Now for the downside...

We returned home to a wreck of a house. Without going into details, we are currently renting this now storm damaged house. The tarps over the bedrooms have been replaced by OSB and tarpaper, but the house smelled rank when we walked in. There are still plenty of repairs to be made on the place (bedroom ceilings, carpet replacement, actually finishing the roof, etc.), hopefully they'll come soon because we're expecting our third kid within a couple of weeks. This is the first place I've rented/leased in almost a decade and as bad as I really want to rant with a long diatribe, it's suffice to say this nightmare of a rent house will soon be a hated memory.

I will say that after this rent house (and its' landlords), any future house will have to pass muster: I will ask previous for utility bills; There will be insulated windows; absolutely no split level houses; I will run away if I see a grassbur; and it had better be a heck of a deal as I don't think I will ever rent again.

Congrats on the new house.  You are planning on buying it right ?  Kind of got confused there, you said you made an offer so I assumed you are buying.
The pole barn sounds nice, you did not mention if it had concrete floors or still dirt ?  I would love to find something like that, we have to start house hunting in June, I have a couple of houses on 5 acres I want to look at, both with shops already on them.
I hope that your wife can at least be comfortable somewhere in the place you are living now being so close to giving birth.  I wish nothing but the best for your family and yourself.

Thanks for the comments, Tom.

Yes, we're buying.

Yes the pole barn has a concrete floor. So I can work on all my projects after a 2 1/2 year hiatus.

Do you have renter's insurance?  it should pay to relocate you to a suitable living place till the house can be put back to a livable state.

Thanks for the thought.  We do have renters insurance and we had considered the hotel/motel route; However, we've decided to switch around bedrooms until either the repairs are made or we move. Overall, it would be easier to make this house work versus having two adults and two young rambunctious toddlers in a hotel/motel room for the next few weeks...

There is less than a month before closing, presuming that everything goes smoothly.

In a nutshell, we're definitely looking forward to the move.

I really hope things go your way, and I am jealous, I have to wait till June to get approved (ex wife stuff with kids have to go away first).  I personally can not wait to get out of where I am now.  I have limited space and neighbors that make it impossible to work on stuff in my driveway. I'll be sure to post photos of the pole barn.

As it is, the rental house is big. But there is only a two car garage, which is being used to store things (junk) we had in the garage and pole barn at our previous house. There was a pole barn with this house, but the landlord was storing his stuff in it.  Their pole barn burned down during a grass fire last year, so I guess it's a blessing we weren't using it.

Within two years at this rent house, we've literally been through a bout of grasshoppers, extreme heat/drought, a wildfire, an earthquake and a tornado...

5 out of 7, I would say that place has some bad luck.   :-\
