Missing bellhousing
« on: June 02, 2012, 01:01:25 pm »
OK, I've learned a lot about motorcycles, but I have a lot to learn yet about cars and trucks.  Please be patient, I'll learn all I can.   ;)

Crawled under the truck today, still learning what all needs to be done to this beast.  What to my surprise, I see no bellhousing cover.  Isn't there normally fluid in there?  Can I just pick up a replacement cover and bolt it on?  Thanks for any advice you guys can give.  BTW, this is a 1987 R10, 350 TBI, 700R4 trans.  On the plus side, I was able to disassemble the steering column this morning and get the hi/lo dimmer switch to work again.  Once piece at a time...

Either way.  Most of the trucks I've had didn't have one.  Covers are a good idea to keep the road grime out of the starter.  If you go purchase one make sure you have a positive ID of the transmission.

Thanks for the reply, Zieg.  So I'm generally OK to just continue to run without the cover?  Is that a part that would only be available as an OEM part?

Chrome- at 1/2 the price.   ;D
BTW, see the note about bolt hole spacing.

I didn't look at it real close- make sure the one you buy is sturdy enough. There''s gotta be a reason for the discrepancies in the prices.

2 wheel drive have stamped steel dust covers. 4 wheel drives had a cast aluminum cover. Shouldn't be any fluid there, if there is then your rear main seal, or front transmission seal is leaking.
Some people are like Slinkies. Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs
