2wd Half Ton swap to 6 lug?
« on: April 28, 2012, 04:09:37 pm »
I'm thinking about swapping my 74 over to six lugs to accommodate a set of 20's a buddy wants to get rid of. Any ideas on the front end swap? I know how to get the rear done, I'm not too sure about the front.

I know there has been some talk but don't remember anyone post a solution.   It would be interesting to find the right rotors to make the swap up front.

It's way less work to use adapters.  I've been using adapters on my truck for over a year and haven't had any issues.  As long as everything is torqued properly, you'll be fine.

I'm not sure if the wheels will fit with the adaptors, immac check It but the I'm almost positive the 1.9 adaptor will not  let the wheel fit

The other way would be to change out the spindles and outward hardware to the 6 lug type.

There were some late 60s C-10s w/ 6 lug setups that would likely be a direct swap if you can find them at all.  Some 90s Chevy/GMC 2wd pickups had a 6 lug setup as well but I doubt it would be a direct swap.

Are you buying the 20's or is he giving them to you?

I wouldn't even consider swapping to 6 lugs if you have to buy the wheels, and I probably wouldn't even if they are a gift.  If they are a gift, sell them or trade up for 5 lug wheels.

It'll be a big expense and pain in the rear and then you'll have a heavily modified truck just to fit some wheels.

If you do swap to 6 lug parts, AVOID the 60's trucks as that will give you drum brakes and you'll have to have to get your brakes balanced properly, your best bet would be the 90's trucks bake was talking about.

I wouldn't modify the truck to fit some wheels though, it's not a big return on your work.

I was planning on converting my truck to 6 lug someday, just to fit those wheels that you used to run 78chev.

I decided against the wheels on account of our being a pita to convert the front end. Then I found early classic enterprises sells a 6 lug rotor for the 1.25" spindles.

Oh well. I have that tidbit of info socked away for later use.
