1987 4WD transmissions?
« on: August 07, 2012, 10:49:46 pm »
I am going to look at an 87 4x4 and was thinking that they had the 700r4 trans in this year truck. The owner states that it has a 350 in it now. What should the gear ratio be for this truck. It is a half ton.

I am thinking about trading my 01 Jeep Cherokee for it and I know I will be going down in the mpg category but can someone tell me what I should expect out of this truck. I get around 21 now and was thinking maybe this truck get 15?

I was going to post a pic of the truck but it said the file was too big. I am not sure how to downsize photos. Sorry.

What size tires? Stock gears? What motor - 350?

Is it carb'd or tbi (they came either way in 87)? My bet is closer to 12 mpg assuming it doesn't have bigger tires and is under geared.

It is a TBI truck and it has 33's on it now. I don't know about the gears yet but I am assuming they are factory. I don't know how many different ratio's were available for this year 1/2 ton 4x4's. Do you know if this year is suppose to have the 700r4 trans in it or were they available with the 350 as well. Oh and yes it has a 350 engine in it.

It's probably got 3.08 gears. There's a small chance it could be 3.42 but unless it's loaded that's doubtful.

As for the trans, if it's a stripped model I think it could have had a 3spd trans but it would have been a th400. I don't think the th350 was still in production by 87.

I would expect about 15-17mpg out of a TBI 4x4, most of these came with 3.08 gears unless someone chose the option.  Only way to check is to look at the RPO sheet.

Okay thanks. Someone must have changed the trans then. I thought they were supposed to have a 700 in them but just wasn't quite sure.
