Electric choke troubles.

I am gonna start off by saying I am a carburetor newb. I have a 84 k10 with a 305 with a Holley carb. The choke sticks closed and I can manually open it with my fingers but as soon as I step on the throttle it will close again so when it is revving down it won't go back to idle just high idle... Any help will be appreciated. I am about to buy a new carb with manual choke, however if I can salvage the 300 and use it somewhere else on the truck I would love it... Thanks

Make sure you have 12V to the electric choke.

Yes 12v "key on" position to the choke. You can also adjust the body of the choke by loosening the three screws and turning it. Is the carb new?  If not someone may have reassembled the choke linkage incorrectly.

Carb is not new. Came with the truck

My best advice to you is to look and ask around for a professional carb re builder. I had mine rebuilt and it was one of the best thing I have done. They will take it COMPLETELY apart, including the electric choke, and work wonders. When you get it back all you have to do is some light tuning and you'll be rollin! It cost me about 80 bucks to have mine done. Pro's don't use the kit from auto parts stores either, they use kits direct from the manufacturer and they know all the little tricks to making a crap carb a new good one. Try that, it's well worth it.
