New Project at a steal of a price
« on: November 15, 2012, 11:47:13 am »
Just though I would post my project that brought me to this site in the first place. I bought a 81 2WD 3/4Ton camper special with a 305 and TH350 and with basically no rust, and what I was told was a 1987 Heavy Half Ton (aka Big 10). That is when I found this site and found out that the 'Big 10' did not exist in 1987, I have the original glove box from the truck so I need to get a picture of it so people can help me figure out what it really is. And I got all the stuff in the back of the truck too, off-road roll bar, four doors (2 which are factory power), two fenders, extra hood, 700r4 trans with NP208 and both drive shafts, extra core support, all new door seals, and extra windshield. Got the truck, frame, and all the stuff for $500 so I couldn't complain after I found out it was not a 'Big 10'. Anyways plan is to re-powder coat the frame and fix up the little body work and re-paint (paint looks good from a far, but it was a horrible job...looks like someone rattle canned it) and put new everything on it, I basically want a show truck that I am not afraid to drive so its going to be trophy winning but I do want it to turn heads. I just need a 4WD hump to covert the 2WD cab to 4WD.

Haven't decided if I want to put a crate 350 carb engine or if I want to put a LS1 engine in it. Any thoughts??? I do want to keep the dual tanks as I will be using it to haul my camper when I travel, but I understand I should be able to do that either way.

O and the 2WD truck runs, just needs new brakes. I was told that they blew a trans line and it didn't run. All that happened was the flex trans line came off the hard line and drain the fluid. I put need filter and gasket in the trans, hooked the line up, filled the fluid, and put two sprays of starting fluid and she started right up and drove around the block.

Here are some pics and any thoughts or things you guys see that may be a hurdle please let me know. This will be my first frame up restro, I usually only do interior, car audio, and electrical so it will be an experience. I will starting this in like 3 months, after winter as it is way too darm cold out now and I do not have a heated garage......yet   :D

'werewolfx13' yeah sorry forgot to put that in there...I know the 2wd complete truck is an 81....the frame was the 87 that I was wondering if it was a standard 1/2ton or if it was upgraded.

I looked up the VIN and I am curious if this is a basic 1/2ton or if it has some upgrade things to it, this is how it decodes....

1GT: US GMC
E: 6001-7000 Hydraulic
V: 4WD
1: 1/2ton
4: two door cab
H: 305 V8 w/TBI
5: check digit
H: 1987
F: Flint, MI (funny because I grew up in Detroit)

I have a pic of the glove box of the 87 with the codes is there a way to detect what these codes are (mine 86 has the codes and the description next to them) I would love to know the original style of the truck as I want to keep it looking original (only different motor).

2. What is B3W??
3. What is K19: Reactor System Air Injection??
4. What is Z88: Conversion, Name Plt GMC??
5. What is E6C: Country Gambia??
6. What is TFE: SALES INCENTIVE COMMITMENT PLUS??
7. What is YH7??

Thanks for the help to all.
