steering box
« on: February 14, 2004, 06:51:00 pm »
I get a loud "pop" when I steer that I think is coming from the steering box.  I have a '77 K10.  It is an AGR box.  I have the repair kit plus a reinforcement from offroad design.  I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem.  I don't think it is any of the ball joints...steering knuckles...drag link, etc...they are all new.  Does anyone know of any adjustments to the box that may be needed?

You check your frame for cracks around the steering box?

Yep...that was one of the first things I did when I bought my truck.  And, it had a lot of them!  I welded them and installed the frame brace kit, plus, a frame brace from offroad design.  I thought it may be a ball joint binding, but, they all seem ok.  The only other thing is the leaf springs.  I know they can cut grooves in each other.  That is, a leaf will cut a groove in the one above it.  When they flex it will "pop" in the groove.  I'll check that out today.  If not,  it has to be from the box.

You can narrow it down by getting someone to turn wheel back and forth while you listen and look for pop.BE VERY CAREFUL if vehicle is running. That is the way I found the pop on my 82 pickup. It was the idler arm.Changed it,and no more pop.
