Retro or 50's/60's look?
« on: November 18, 2012, 08:30:54 pm »
I'm trying to finish my '87 chevy shortbox and wondering how to give it a cool look with 50'-60's a flavor. I don't want yet another "black, slightly lowered short box" (lots around here), so I thought about the possibility of something different by airbrushing trim on the side to match the trim of a mid 60's chev pickup I see around town - my fave truck of all time... (talking about the chrome on the belt line and the trim up the corner of the cab.) but wonder if it would look stupid.

I like the old speed shop truck look too (think 60's pickup, flat black, red steel rims, faded speed shop logo, etc) but feel this truck is too new for that to work?

Open to suggestions here - Will be keeping the body stock but installing 2 or 3" lowering kit (not slammed - this truck still needs to be a truck)

I don't think these trucks are to new looking for the speedshop look. Fadded logo on the door, red, or yellow rims on a matte black truck. Raides white letter tires instead of whitewalls. Maybe a small unit number on the top rear of the front fender?
Some people are like Slinkies. Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs

1973 and newer are WAY too new to have the 50's, 60's look.   Like flat black with red wheels and whitewalls...  looka appaling on these trucks....   Now flat black does look on these, if you have a nice orange or green or red accent to it.    I'd say lower it, put at most 18" rims on it and put some green or orange or red accents on it and it would look cool.  It will never be a 50's or 60's hotraod cuz its a 70's truck....  the lines are too new... IMHO.

Yeah, best way to get that look is to get a 50s or 60s truck. I also agree that these trucks will look quite natural as a speed shop truck, all through their history. Not only the look... a lowered '87, properly rigged and with a good driver, could very well embarrass a muscle car driver.
