86 c10 with starter/ flex plate issues ...
« on: March 05, 2013, 08:57:14 pm »
Anyone have any issues with their trucks starting up clean ? I'm at a loss with my truck I put a new starter in it, also had a tranny shop put a new flex plate in it and first couple of days it started up fine. a few days later it would grind once and awhile when I would start it then
Tonight when I got home it idled high then after I shut her down I turned the key off and the starter was just spinning anyone have the same issue? ???

Did you check the clearance between the starter teeth and the flywheel teeth and shim it if needed?

Yes the tranny shop said that it lined up very nice and didn't need any shims ... Idk this morning gonna pull the flex plate cover off and take a peek at it ,almost sounds like it ripped the spur gear right off the starter.

Did you ever figure out what the problem was? I'm having the same problem. I've tried new starter, flexplate, & bolts. Shimmed up, starts good for a few times, then horrible grinding noise. I'm thinking a hairline crack in the mounting boss.

That sort of sounds like a cracked flex plate.
