So far I have gone through 2 starters in like a couple of months for some reason the drive gear on the starter keeps crapping out on me so I bought one of the high torque pgm starters but this doesn't seem to line up all that well with the flex plate ..... :-\ what are some of you guys running for starters?

There's actually a correct way to install a starter involving shims and checking tolerances. It's helpful to have a remote starter switch, by keeping the large battery wire unhooked and then only energizing the solenoid be sure you can look at the contact pattern and adjust accordingly.

Okay thanks I don't have a remote starter switch I always used the 1/8" gap rule between where the starter gear and the flex plate teeth meet ... Just very frustrated just spent 2 1/2 days getting my flip kit and 8 " drop installed and undercoating the frame and then it happened again ...blaaaah

You haven't changed the flexplate before this problem started have you? Once the parts store sold me the wrong flexplate to replace my cracked one and my starter problems drove me crazy until I finally pulled the new one and compared it to the old one and spotted the problem. It would act up and I would reshim it and it would be ok for a while and then act up again. Just thinking...

i think there could be a flexplate issue also... because its chewing the gears while the engine is running to cause that kind of damage....

Well I finally broke down and bought a pgm 3hp mini starter cause i was blowin out drive shafts left and right on the local parts stores reman starters and what they gave me was a circular sponge pad for the mini so I was using the metal shims I have always used ... Started pulling my hair out totally frustrated ... Did a little more research aaaaaand come to find out that circular sponge pad is what this particular starter uses for its shim... And this motor also must have a high compression head. But it starts like a champ now!

Yeaaah!    I went thru 3 starters before I got the correct one and right flex plate.  Odd,  It does make a difference.

Good on you
