700r4 tv pressure
« on: June 12, 2013, 07:57:47 pm »
Can someone help me verify my tv adjustment using a pressure gage?  My new 700r4 is in, and after a few trips with really weird shifting, it seems to be acting somewhat normal.  Hopefully a bit of trash has just happily moved out of what it was stuck in.  I'm using an edelbrock carb. with the tv corrector, but I want to know that this is right before I screw something up.

Thanks.  I have read through all of that and have my tv cable set up properly with those instructions, I just wanted to double check using a pressure gage (which is supposed to be more accurate).  I have only made a few test drives, but two of those test drives exhibited some strange behavior.  For the most part it was not wanting to change gear, especially into third.  I'm also pretty sure it started out in second gear once.  Last night I test drove it and at light throttle that problem just went away, but if I tried to give a little more throttle it didn't want to kick down to a lower gear and just generally feels like I'm driving with my brakes on.  The builder suggested lube guard additive and drive it a little.  If that doesn't work he thinks he can tear into the valve body or governor and solve my problems.  I'm very nervous that when it was acting up something may have been damaged (bands, clutches, etc.).

The problem isn't pressure sounds like sticking valves, could try the additive but I'd just pull the valve body and clean it and drain all the fluid(torque converter too)and put a fresh batch in.

I think the builder is willing to fix whatever is wrong in the truck, if possible.  I just want to make sure that the pressures from the tv system are correct so that I don't do any damage or void whatever warranty I may have.  If I take it to him and the tv system has a problem that is somehow my fault he would be right to not cover damages.  I think it is right but I want to know it is right.  Whatever the other issues are I am hoping he can figure out.

Well, if it's under warranty don't mess with it don't check anything, take it back and tell them what the problem is and let them fix it, and let them adjust the TV cable, that way if they screw it up it's their fault not yours, don't give them a reason to blame you, trust me they will try and put the blame on you...

I put the trans. in the truck, so the tv is my baby.  I think its right but I don't want that to be a potential argument.  With the symptoms, I'm confident that's not my main problem.  It is just hard to get a sense that I probably have it right when it shifts different every short test drive I take it on.

This is a good thread here lately there have been folks installing 700 r4 Trans and having the same issues some say it is just how they break in others say its improper install. This makes me nervous about spending money on a700r4. Ugh what to do. Thing is you say it shifts different every time you drive it. Getting better or worse?

I've built a few of them and they're just a TH350 with another gear, the TV cable controls oil pressure from idle on up(low pressure at idle to high pressure at high rpm)reason for that is the pump is aluminum with iron gears, constant high pressure will reduce pump life and it's not necessary at idle and low speeds, but as throttle is opened and power is applied more pressure is required to apply clutches or they will slip that is why TV cable adjustment is very critical, more 700's end up in scrap yards for that reason than any other. That is all that cable does so if it is adjusted properly then any other issues are somewhere else. Eratic shifting is usually from something sticking, valves in the VB or governor or both, hot and cold oil will make it shift different also especially if there's any dirt in there, of course if the tranny wasn't built right to begin with it will never shift right no matter what, critical part besides cleanliness of any automatic is to keep everything in perfect alignment. Bad part is you didn't build it so you have no idea what's going on the there and all you can do is go by the symptoms and it's all guess work, I highly recommend taking the truck to him and let him drive it, if he knows his stuff he should be able to pinpoint it right away since he built it.

I'm good.  I checked my tv adjustment via pressure with a gage last night.  It is off a little, but pretty close.  The plan all along was to take it to him, but I just wanted to know where I stand with my tv setup.
There are many pressure checks, but just a quick sanity check is that the pressure should drop about two pounds when the cable is removed at idle compared to hooked up.  When the cable is hooked up a slight tug of the cable should increase pressure.  This was the info. I was trying to find.

Last one I built was for my Nova, put a full manual VB in don't have to worry about all that adjustment stuff, lol, in fact I think I'm going to do the same in my pickup.. :D
