More Time Than Money
« on: August 25, 2013, 10:19:20 pm »
I picked up a free 86 K10 from a buddy of mine couple of months ago.  The engine had thrown a rod and so I picked up a replacement off of Craigslist for $50.  The guy told me it ran when he pulled it out 6 months ago, but did not seem like it was running right and that it had a bad rear seal.

I took the new engine apart of few weeks ago and started cleaning and figuring out what I had.  Thanks to what I assume was an EGR issue there was about 4 inches of crud in the intake valley.  The carbon had even encased the push rods and it was a wonder the oil was even making back to the pan because all the drain holes were completely clogged.  Oddly enough all the cylinder walls wall were good and everything cleaned up pretty good with a whole lot of extra work.

I opted to go with a re-ring kit and some work on the crank.  Other than that it has all been serious man hours getting it to look good.  Hopefully it will run as good as it looks and I should know come next weekend.  Granted it is a bone stock 305, but $250 bucks into it so far and had a whole lot of fun.  Get it running now and hope to solve some rust issues in the fall.  The rocker panels are almost gone and the floor pans are pretty rough, but if it all goes well there we are not talking a whole lot of money into it even then.  I hope to post more pics as I go.

That's probably why most of us have gotten into to these truck . The price tag . If you can do the work yourself the cost of owning things is way less than any other truck out there . Looking forward to your pictures
