Cs130 and other wiring questions
« on: September 21, 2013, 05:22:46 pm »
I am doing a lot of different things to my 83 GMC SWB 2wd auto right now. If you haven't read any of my other posts here is a snapshot of work to be done.

Swap 305 for a 350 (on engine stand now waiting for mor parts)

Put factory 98 serpentine belt setup on (still have to buy water pump, alternator, power steering pump, pulleys, ac compressor, hoses, and bolts). This means I only have the brackets, tensioner, and idler.

Install electric fans

Fix all rust (currently working on this and am thinking about dropping it off at the body shop). Wait you have to have money for that.

Install aftermarket gauges in factory location. (I have Auto Meter 5" tach and 5" speedo and 2 1/8" fuel, water, oil, volt gauges)

Upgrade headlights (maybe just relay setup, but I'd like to go with that and newer halogen setup with the removable bulbs)

Ok I'll stop and get to my questions.

Upgrading the alternator:  I have looked into the posts and online. I will probably just splice the new connector on instead of using the adapter. I'll also run new wires to junction block and starter. This will be part of cleaning things up. My question is with changing to aftermarket speedo and tach I will lose the volt engine volt light on startup. According to this no problem just use the resistor connector but that is for the loss of light or using LEDs. This wire is supposed to energize the alternator. Where do I hook the other connector wire to. Is there a wire I can find in the gauge bundle or can I use something else. I hope this question makes sense.

There will be more wiring questions I'm sure. I should have taken all my posts and put them in one build post.

Not sure I am following you.  What gauges are you using?

FYI tapatalk isn't free anymore for android unless you get the old version...

I'll get the gauge models at lunch time.  The speedo and tach are the Auto Meter, but the others are Equus brand.  My question might not be needed.  I was talking with a buddy yesterday about the serp conversion and I think I may just hold off on the swap and put it back together stock for now, but keep collecting parts.

This guy owns a mechanic shop and parts store here in town and I was making a list of the parts I needed him to order me.  The list was big.

I have a serp conversion and although I did not put it on, I do have the pleasure of fixing it. My alt has the plug wires connected to the brown wire on our trucks that supply the volt/charge light at start up. Then i have a batt cable from the pos post on the back of alt to the pos post on the battery. No problems so far
