Radio antenna connector 1986 factory radio?
« on: November 15, 2013, 08:03:00 pm »
Hello,
I have an '86 C-10 Silverado with the factory radio, which is an analog AM FM with five push button mechanical dual shaft.  I am having trouble with the windshield dipole antenna and want to replace it with a full 31" whip.  I bought the whip, mounted it, and found that the coax connector on the aftermarket antenna is too big to fit into the radio.  I ordered what I thought was the right adapter off Ebay, which fits my aftermarket antenna connector, but now the adapter is too small!  What size connector goes on this radio, what do you call it, and where in the world do I find it?

Any thoughts on what kind of radio will work good in this old truck without having to butcher the mount?  I just want AM FM, no tape, CD, etc.  It's hard anymore to find a dual shaft radio!!

Thanks for any suggestions.
Derek.

Wow, that looks pretty good.  How does it perform on AM??  I've got the 31" mast mount antenna and a super quiet electrical system.  Will it do as good as the factory radio?

Will the one I posted do as well as stock?  I would hope it would or be better.

The only reason I ask is because it's hard to beat the old analog Delco radios as far as sensitivity AND selectivity.  Newer technology (new, as being like the one posted) should definitely do as good or better.  Back in the late 80's when the stuff went to "digital" display, the AM portion was terrible.  I think car manufacturers figured no one listened to AM since FM was king at the time.  I believe they reconsidered when people started reverting to AM broadcast when it mainly went to talk radio.

Anyway, I'll probably give one of those a try.  They do look good..  maybe just not as good as the old Delco analog I'd like to tear apart and rebuild  :)

Thanks for the suggestion.
