new here/ rebuilding a 350
« on: February 04, 2014, 12:06:07 pm »
hey everyone! im new here. im working on a 350 for my 83 c20. right now the truck has a 305, it had originally. the block I have is an 638 four bolt main, one piece rear main. I want to rebuild this with lots of bottom end torque in mind... im not so sure I want to make it a 383 im on a shoestring budget, im 17 and have a budget like  a 17 year old. the motor has dish pistons with 4 valve reliefs, and I have a set of 991 heads for it.  I have been looking at the kit summit racing has for $237 that comes with all the gaskets and bearings and flat top pistons and thought that would be a good way to go, but didn't know if there would be a big improvement to those flat tops from the original dish's. I was thinking something like an edlebrock performer intake would be about right. I have some longtube headers to put on. I also was planning on like an rv cam kit from summit but I don't know what kind of specs I would want, my tranny is a 700r4. prolly gonna use a good quadrajet if I can find one (possibly one from a big block) or a 600 or 650 cfm carb of some sort if I can find a deal on one. let me know what you guys think, my truck doesn't need to be a hot rod I just want good improvement from the 305, and I live in a hilly area.  in the near future I may have a trailer for cars and antique tractors... who knows but but im sure she'll see a trailer or two

Are you rebuilding a 350?  Keep in mind your gearing and tire size while planning, but a good RV cam will have the optimal specs for it, just build around it.
You will need to have the block inspected prior to buying pistons to determine the size you need also.

I did a 350 and ran the RV cam and it worked extremely well.  I'm running a 2.73 rear end and a TH400.

Love your truck.  It makes me want to put a flat bed on mine.

That truck looks like it is made to work.
As Capt. Said, before you buy anything I would strongly suggest you spend the money to get the block checked out properly, you do not want to spend the money and time to rebuild a engine and have it fail within 20,000 miles due to something like weak cylinder walls.
Or the hassle of not checking it to make sure it did not need to bored out to remove some defects in the cylinder walls.
