rear drop
« on: March 24, 2007, 10:12:00 pm »
On my 74 C10 I already have a shackle and hanger kit to drop it 4". Would the addition of a flip kit be overboard? I'm wanting a little bit better stance, and plan on adding lowering spindles to the 3" drop springs up front. What do you guys think?

My junk has a flip kit in the rear, 3" spindles, and 2" or 3" springs up front. It sits jacked up in the rear.

In order to add the hanger/shackle kit you would have to notch the frame at the rear axle and maybe at a frame crossmember for the driveshaft. The bed would have to be notched for the longer shackle.

If somebody has pictures of all this done I'd sure like to check em out.

but i already have the shackle/hanger kit installed and didn't have to notch because it's a longbed

i was just wondering if the flip kit would actually lower it hellaciously and look terrible

The Shackel and Hanger should have given you about a 4 inch drop on average.
A flip will drop you the distance of your axel tube plus the thickness of your spring pack. So approx. another 4-6 inchs. You will have to c-notch the frame and modify the cross member for the driveshaft to clear. (No experiance with long bed ribs underneth, may need to modify as well.)
Depending on what you have got going on out front you will be very low.
I dont belive I have ever heard of anybody doing it (both)
I would like to see photos if anybody has done it.
Some of these guys here like it LOW I know.

first question is how much lower do you want it?  5" lower, or 2"???
Secondly if you flip the rear assume you will have at the least 5" of drop.  You WILL have to cut the frame if you flip it with the shackles/hangers, AND you will have to adjust your pinion angle.

just a few more inches

I'd like just a couple more inches. I plan on definitely getting the spindles up front. If you check out my page, you'll know what I mean. This is a longbed work truck with optional a/c put in at the dealer from the look of the paperwork I found in the glovebox. I just want it a little bit lower. I still want that muscle truck look, but it sits about as high as the same year stock F100 Ranger that a buddy of mine at work drives on a daily basis. That's sad. I don't want it scraping speed bumps off the pavement, just tucked a little more. Take a look at the pix and let me know of any solutions you guys have.

In the pix, mine's the one in the driveway closest to the street. The one close to the garage is the 76 I got a ton of parts off of.

I appreciate all the input and suggestions, but I have decided that the way it sits now is the way to keep it. I might swap the stock coils back in and go with spindles for the alignment benefit, but other than that she is low enough. The front bumper is already scarred pretty bad from the local roads, speedbumps, and driveways. Plus, it does actually have a nice stance.

yeah that what I meant by "drivability issues"
I have to run a guantlet of speedbumps just to get out of my place. Then the roads around here are suited more to logging trucks, not seriously lowered custom trucks.
I just got sick of crushed headers and banged up stuff under the truck.
Wish I lived where I could run lower, but I like to cruise it and use it.
