Distributor install problem
« on: September 16, 2014, 08:28:24 pm »
I am putting things back together I have the #1 cylinder at TDC not 180 out. I try and install the dist where the rotor is pointing at cylinder #1 but the dist will not sit all the way down. The only way it sits all the way down is if the rotor is point streight forward. Is there something i am doing wrong?

I know initial timing is like 12 BTDC.

With rotor pointing at #1 cylinder.

With rotor pointing at front of engine.

The distributor shaft isn't aligned with the oil pump drive.  You can approach the solution two ways...
  • The easy way - drop the distributor down into position and have an assistant "bump" the starter.  When the shafts align the distributor will drop into position.  Realign the timing marks to verify rotor position.

  • The less easy way - remove the distributor and use a long standard blade screwdriver to slightly rotate the oil pump drive then restab the distributor.  Repeat the process until the distributor drops into position.
Set the timing.

It's difficult to know just how much you don't know until you know it.
In other words... if people learn by making mistakes, by now I should know just about everything!!!
