bed-side toolbox cover
« on: October 02, 2014, 12:47:05 pm »
I recently purchased a '73 C20 and I'm working through the missing parts. One is the Driver's bed-side toolbox cover. Sometime in the past, somebody put a gas tank there, and never put the cover back.

In my excitement to begin, I bought a bed-side toolbox cover/door off Ebay.. After I'd bought it, I realized it was for a GMC. Anybody know if this will fit the Chevy just fine? (If not, does anybody know where to get one of these? I've looked through a few sites and not seen this part)

thanks!

Does your bedside toolbox area look similar to the photos here (albeit minus the cover and maybe the box)? http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/smforum/index.php?topic=28895.msg241231#msg241231

As long as the toolbox cover/door was for a '73-up GMC, it should work fine on your Chevrolet.

There really isn't any difference in these era GMC & Chevrolet trucks. The difference is really in grilles, horn buttons, fender badges and what brand is stamped in the tailgate.

Unlike Ford trucks, the bedside toolbox just didn't seem to be a popular option for GMC/Chevrolet trucks. Maybe people desiring extra cost options liked an additional gas tank more than a bedside toolbox?

I have only seen a few of the '73-up trucks that had a bedside toolbox. I am unaware of anybody reproducing the door. Unless you can find an new old stock (NOS) door; then Ebay, salvage yards, craigslist, looking for pickup bed trailers, cutting up a bedside/fabricating a door are your most likely options.

For the NOS route, a GMC or Chevrolet parts dealer should be able to look up the original part number from microfiche or paper records. If they're looking it up, I'd suggest you go ahead and get the numbers for everything in and around the toolbox. Having the original part number, you can search Ebay and the internet for that part number. There are a lot of companies that specialize in NOS parts only that may have what your looking for. Sometimes, you may find it but you may not like the price and other times you may order 3 of the item just because you can.
