Need help with Cylinder Heads
« on: October 18, 2014, 10:34:42 am »
Recently got my truck back up and running. 1987 Chevy Stepside V10 350 5.7L.  She sat for 5 years in the AZ desert.  I had to replace fuel sending units in both tanks, fix some wiring issues, and changed from a 4 barrel carb to a 600 Edelbrock. She has HEI distributor.

I took it to a reputable shop (or so I thought) to get a tune up because I am not the greatest with Carbs and timing and all that jazz.

They called me and informed me that the number 5 valve is not working properly.   When I took her in she was fine but when I picked her up she sputters, can't get power, want to die constantly.  I am thinking I want to just replace the heads.  I am not sure what I'm looking for when shopping for heads though.  I can do the job myself but need to know what to buy.  Please help.  I would really love to get her back up and going again.

Assuming they replaced spark plug wires:

1) Make sure the wires are on in the right firing order.

2) What kind of wires did they use?

If they broke something to make it run worse than when you took it in, they broke something they touched.  Hydraulic lifters don't need adjustment, so I would look at ignition.

I just recently built a 350, i used Dart Iron eagle heads. ready to bolt on. they have all the accessories holes. But your fix may just be someting simple to repair. i would check the things that rich said first. hope this helps
