Outer Tie Rod Replacement
« on: September 16, 2014, 12:57:16 pm »
Finally got the truck in for it's inspection that was due in May. I would have passed except for the fact that the right outer tie rod is bad. I'm just curious how to tell exactly what needs replaced (the entire tie rod or just the end or what) and how to do it. I couldn't seem to find any videos or instructions online. Is this something I could easily tackle myself? Thanks!

The right side is the short adjustable inexpensive side.  Just replace the end piece.  While it's loose I would check for play on the long piece.  If need be, apply some pressure to the tapered bolt while removing the nut.  It's not a complicated job.  To readjust, just measure between leading edge of rims to trailing edge of rims.  If I thought my tires weren't wearing good, I'd readjust, but that's never happened.

Easy replacement.  Mark the old one by using a file or hacksaw where the treads meet the sleeve.  Loosen the one clamp closest to the tie rod end.  Wedge a screw driver or chisel closest to tie rod at the opening of the sleeve.  Use a pickle fork or just hammer the old one out of the spindle.  Un-screw old one out and install new on.  Measure where you made the mark on the threads to the grease fitting center and put the new one at that spot.  It should be close enough for a re-inspection.  Grease it and put the new cotter key in.

The only thing I would add is to spray the threads down with free-all the day before.

when i just did mine on my dana 60 it was the long piece. but i measured from end to end cause different manufactures might might different lengths of parts. but on a 81 k10 both sides should be short with a long adjusting tube in between
