new (to me) 350
« on: November 15, 2014, 06:05:59 pm »
The old 350 in my 77 K10 rust bucket died. So i bought a complete used Goodwrench 350 motor off craigslist really cheap. It is supposed to be a running motor with low miles out of a RV that has been sitting in a garage for over a year. I have it on a stand in my garage waiting for above freezing weather to swap it into my truck. Before I drop it in an 'hope for the best', what should I do to it besides clean it up? I'd love to tear into it but I don't have the money to do it up right so I want to drop it in with as little work as possible. I will of course change the oil, etc. What is the minimum I should do before I install it and give it a shot?

I know this engine was a gamble but for what I paid it was a small gamble.

Thanks,

i would be thinking about how dried the gaskets are. might be better to replace them now, but idk how long or if it will even effect them not being ran for a year. might want to pull the distributor and prime the oil pump before starting

i would at least replace the oil pan gasket if it looks like its leaking even a little bit.

and maybe the rear main seal while you are at it

ok getting ready to drop in the replacement motor. I changed the valve cover and oil pan gaskets. It turns over really smooth and is pretty clean inside. Looking good so far. The old 350 was pretty weak and worn so I am hoping the truck has more power with the 'new' motor in it but I have a few dollars and have found EdelBrock 2101 intake and some shorty "block hugger" style headers on Craigslist that I could afford. Will I get any significant performance improvement with a new intake and the old Q-jet and header? I have read on the internet (so it MUST be true) that they won't do much without a better cam and there doesn't seem to be much love for the old Q-jet.

What do you think. would I be wasting money to do just intake and header? I guess I could do that stuff later but it sure would be easier to do before it put the motor in the truck.

Suggestions? Opinions?
Thanks!

theres nothing wrong with a q jet as long as its in properer working order. the intake might make a difference but if you dont change your cam and heads then you still cant breath as much as you possibly can. headers i personally like to put them on everything but just like the intake if you want the full benefits you should go after heads and cam

the Q-jets are great carbs but as was mentioned make sure its not worn out. there is cheap pin kits you can put in that will make a big difference if you do have some wear.
