Remove 700R4 transmission from 305/350 engine steps?
« on: February 20, 2015, 11:52:03 am »
84 C10 700R4 305/350 Silverado.  Engine/trans are out of truck as one unit.  I need to remove the transmission.  Following process from 1984 Light Duty Truck Service Manual.  I have questions re: steps 10, 11, and 21:

Removal (Except K Model)
3. Disconnect T.V./detent cable a t its upper end - see "T.V./Detent Cables".
4. Remove transmission oil dipstick (and bolt holding dipstick tube if accessable.)
5. Raise vehicle.
6. Remove propeller shaft as outlined in Section 4A.
7. Disconnect speedometer cable at the transmission.
8. Disconnect shift linkage at transmission.
9. Disconnect all electrical leads at the transmission and any clips that retain the leads to the transmission case.
10. Remove transmission support braces and flywheel cover. Mark flywheel and torque converter to maintain original balance.
11. Remove torque converter to flywheel bolts and/or nuts.

12. Disconnect the catalytic converter support bracket if equipped.
13. Remove transmission mount attaching bolts.
14. Position a transmission jack under the transmission oil pan and raise the transmission slightly.
15. Remove transmission support to frame bolts (and insulators if used).
16. Slide the transmission support rearward and remove from vehicle.
17. Lower the transmission to gain access to the oil cooler lines and T.V./detent cable attachments.
18. Disconnect the oil cooler lines and T.V./detent cable.  Cap all openings.
19. Support engine with a suitable tool and remove the transmission to engine bolts.
20. Disconnect the transmission assembly, being careful not to damage any cables, lines or linkage.
21. Install torque converter holding tool J-21366 and remove the transmission assembly from the vehicle.

Questions:
Step 10 / 11 - The flywheel cover is on the front lower section of the trans?
- I reach inside the removed cover and unbolt several, ie. 5?, TC bolts?
- Doing these two substeps allows the TC to stay on the driveshaft when i separate the transmission from the engine?  and, not damage the TC spline opening?

Step 21 - I do not have indicated tool.  Can i use something, ie, hand, wood dowel, hammer handle, to press against the TC while pulling the transmission away from the engine?

Thanks!
Craig

Yes the flywheel cover is on the bottom where the trans meets the engine (assuming that its still there).  Remove it and then remove the torque converter bolts (you'll have to rotate the engine at some point to get them all).  Remove trans to engine bolts, and then slide the trans away from the engine.  That tool is just a piece of thin metal that holds the torque converter in place in the transmission, and isn't totally necessary.
