Cannot get correct pinion seal.

Hello this is my first post but done a lot of reading here lots of great info thanks to you all!! OK now I have a 1984 K-10 with a 1985 12 bolt rearend. I recently had a friend install new ring, pinion, and carrier. My ol yoke was messed up so I bought a new one that's a little more heavy duty. The problem I got is if I find a seal that fits the housing it does not fit the yoke if I find one that fits the yoke it does not fit the housing(to small just falls in). The one that fits the housing has a outer lip and the one that fits the yoke does not. Any help would be greatly appreciated. How ever I did have the right seal at one point but my mechanic distorted it putting it in and it leaked badly. I threw it away after i thought I had the correct one. My bad!!! Thanks for any help I receive.

Howdy and welcome to the site!  You might introduce yourself in the new member forum.

Are you certain it's about the year and model of rear end?  Can you post some photos?

From the factory, a 1985 truck axle with either 5 or 6-lugs used a GM Corporate 10-bolt.

If what your currently have is a truck 12-bolt, those were used from 1973- 1981(ish).
1973 GMC K2500, Super Custom, Camper Special, 350, TH350, NP203, 4.10's
1974 Chevrolet K10, Custom Deluxe, 350, SM465, NP203, 3.73's

The mechanic that is helping me wrote the numbers down came back and said its 85 so I wont swear to anything but this should be correct but I'm pretty sure my yoke is different than the factory one its made by spicer. Its got 6 lug axles and is corporation 12 bolt. The first gears I ordered were wrong because I thought it was 10 bolt. Thank you for the reply. Just wondered if anyone else has had this issue Im going through.

1981 (82) was the last year you could get a 12bolt, so it cannot be an 85, someone swapped an older axle in it.  Pretty common.
I am assuming it has 12 bolts on the diff cover right.

X2 on what Capt said. Try the pinion seal for a 70s K10. Sounds like your mechanic needs to brush up on his skills.

Yes it has 12 bolts on the diff cover.

That would be a 12bolt so ignore the year, it did not come in a 1985 truck.  If you need a reference, it is 1973-1981(82)

Any other details on your truck?
It could have had the rear axle swapped? Or it could be a newer cab on an older frame?
Is the U joint at the rear end yoke that you are currently working with a crossover , or combo joint? Does it have two different size cap diam.? Is the cross longer one way than the other?
Is the front axle a 10 bolt? Or a Dana 44?
An 85 should have an NP208 transfer case. All aluminum, with a shifter that lays down very close to the florr when in 2 wheel drive.
Older truck would have an NP203, or NP205 transfer case. They both use a stand up design shifter.

It's a corp 10 bolt in the front. It had a 700R4 tranny with a 208 transfer case. I installed a sm465 with a np 205 T-case so I had new drive shafts made for it. I believe I got the correct seal now just picked it up its a timken 8622. Thanks guys appreciate all the help.
