Popping Noise when turning sitting still
« on: March 01, 2015, 02:10:53 pm »
I've noticed for some time that when sitting still and turning the wheel to the left there is a slight pop like something going into place. Is it just bushings?

Every time that I have heard a popping noise like you describe, I have found that my frame has cracked.   Look at your steering gear while someone turns the wheel and see if it flexes. There are 4 bolts that hold it to the frame, Make sure they are tight and look closely at the frame around those bolt holes. also look at the bumper bracket on the drivers side, look at the frame where the shocks mount
Bushings will usually rattle or you will have a hard knock

also look at the cross member by the steering box.

It's fixable
Check the frame at right rear upper shock mount
Bet you got cracks there too

If you have tires on it bigger than stock , yourr frame is probably cracked.

A death sentence?  hardly, yours is not the first frame to crack.  They have kits to repair /reinforce frames at the common points where they crack

The steering box frame cracks kit requires welding in place. check the 4WD guys on this site

Check all of your front spring bushings as well.

30 year old bushings could be rotted away.

Turns out my spring packs are moving a bit inside of the pack.
