Neutral Safety / Backup Switch
« on: June 18, 2015, 07:25:19 pm »
Hi, I have an 85 K10, 305, 700R4. My reverse lights do not work unless I push the column shift lever almost into Park. I figure the switch is bad so I bought a new one since they are not very expensive. Before I swap it out I thought I might ask if anyone know how the switch is held in the column? Earlier switches are held in two bolts. Mine appears to snap in somehow. Prefer not to just pry the old one out unless that is how it is supposed to be done. Don't want to break anything when I remove the old switch.

Thanks!

couple things make sure the rubber/plastic bushings on the shifter linkage are still intact and there

Great suggestions! I did actually replace the shift linkage and bushings (w/OEM parts from a local GM dealer) from the column to the bellcrank on the trans. Mine were all pretty worn or rotten from years of salted roads. So bad I could not manually select Low 1!

I also tried one of the universal linkage kits, but could never get it adjusted to selector gate in the column. Nice hardware, but a waste of $ in my opinion.

Thank you,

Rob

OK. The switch basically unsnaps from the column jacket. Two tabs hold it in place.

New one just snaps in place.

And it is only a backup switch, not a neutral safety switch. Only has backup light wiring going to it.

Also did not realize it has some amount of adjustment. Probably coulda made the old switch work with a slight adjustment... oh well.

At least I have backup lights now. Be nice to see behind me when I snowplow at night!
