81 cab for 77 cab
« on: January 25, 2004, 06:45:00 pm »
I bought today a nice clean 81 cab for my 77 stepside.  I know about the removal of the cowl and the wiper 'stub's differences.  My question is that there are holes under the windshield for the cowl piece and mine doesn't.  What do you do about those holes?  Also the 81 has 3 wiper 'stub' mounting bolts and mine has 2.  Do you fill and re-drill?  Thanks all, and I am new here.. looks great!

Just use the cowl screen and wiper parts from the 81. Much easier than punching holes that were never meant to be. You can still use your 77 wiper motor. Just use the wiper armatures from the 81 cab.
Good luck, James

If you want to keep your '77 walk off then you will need to drill holes for the older wiper linkage.  You will also need to remove the hood hinges from the cab, since the older trucks have them on the fenders.

I would like to use the 81 wiper armatures but I am told they stick out farther than the 77's in order to clear the metal cowl piece?

That's right, the later wiper arm studs are longer to protrude through the cowl that is bolted to the cab.  The older models had the cowl built into the hood and the wiper arm studs were therefore shorter to allow the wipers to go under the cowl.  The older and later designs are not interchangeable with the walkoffs.
