Keep the new bed, modify it, or sell it?
« on: August 22, 2015, 02:44:08 pm »
So I've needed a long bed for my 81 k20 for some time now. I've had a bunch of my buddy's who scrap looking as well. So I get the call the other day that one of my friends found one. He said I'm gonna buy the whole truck for scrap if you want the bed. He said the truck was from the original owner. Motor had blown years ago but he had a bed cap on it since he bought it new and the bed sides were rust and for the most part dent free. He said I'll sell you the bed for $300 if you want it. So naturally I said sold! It was about a day later that I realized in my excitment I had forgotten to ask if it was single or dual tank and what year truck it was. Well it just so happens it was single tank which is what I wanted  but the truck was a 76 so instead of having gas filler doornit just has the exposed gas cap. Now while I do love the simple look of the exposed cap I'm not sure it's going to look right on a square headlight truck. So the real question is should I keep it like it is and just go with it? Should I cut and weld in a filler recess and door? Or should I sell it and keep looking?  Just looking for some opinions here.

My answer depends on where you live and your body work skills
If your in the rust belt and found a clean bed, I'd keep it.  Solid beds are a rare find around here in Mass.  Like you said, you could weld (or glue) a square fuel door onto it.
If you live in a dry climate, it may be easier to sell what you have and buy what you need.

Yea I probably should've clarified some of that. I live in southwest Virginia so we definelty have rust but not terrible. Really the bigger problem around here is just the price. When a nice bed comes up people want a small fortune. I thought $300 was a good deal for a really good condition bed

I don't think I can give you any impartial advice, since I am looking for a clean bed of that particular vintage for my 74.
