Help Me Close the Cover on my SM465

I had the rolling pin sheer off and ended up with the shifter coming out of the transmission and onto the floor while backing out the other day. You can see in the first pic.

To make matters worse the rolling pin that holds the little t-piece at the end also sheered off and the "t" part fell into the transmission. I jumped at trying to take the cover off to retrieve it, but without the shifter, I couldn't get it into "halfway to reverse."  With the bolts on the cover out, I could only get the cover to come up 2". I tried. I used a flathead screwdriver to push that button inside there and tried my best to find reverse, but no luck. I did get the gears to move slightly and the button/slot did move up some, but still could not remove the cover. I watched a vid on YouTube and realized I could get to the "t" part by removing one of the covers on the side of the case. 

That worked! I fished it out with a magnet. So I used a cotter pin to hold the "t" in place and tried to get the gears to move back and close the cover, but no luck. I can't seem to get the shifter to find that slot to move the gears to begin shifting gears again. I definitely can't close the cover yet either. The cover needs to slide back half an inch or so.

I wrestled with that thing for an hour and gave up. It's got to be something simple that I'm not doing. Any thoughts?

Also where do I pick up the pins i need to replace for the shifter?

Enaberif, I did watch those vids and unless I missed it, he isn't addressing my issue or showing me how to put the cover on and pull the gears back into position for shifting.

Where do I get these two rolling pins?

They are different sizes.

I used a screw driver to shift this forward (trying to find reverse). Now I just need it to go back so I can get the shifter to sit in where that button is. I'm hoping then I can close the lid and button this up.

Any ideas? Should the shifter still reach it? I can get it to. What is the best tool to shift with when the shifter is out or not available. I'm sure there is a trick that I haven't got here.

Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated.

Roll Pins.  O'Reilly's should definitely have them either behind the counter in a tackle box, in the Help! or Dorman section.

I thought so too, but they would have had to order the one I needed for the cover. At least the O'Reilly's I was at. I did buy the tackle box they had because I figured one in there would work for the shifter, which it did. But the 1/4 sized one for the cover, I still need.

I've watched a lot of film on the SM465 and my game plan today is (tell me, if I'm missing a step):

1. Make sure the gears 1-4 are in neutral
2. Make sure cover/shifter is halfway into reverse
3. Take Shifter off
4. Make sure the reverse gear is halfway into reverse or neutral
5. Slide on cover without the shifter on ("slide on" is an overstatement of simplicity)
6. Install Shifter back on (with both roll pins)
7. Install 2-3 bolts and run through the gears.
8. Put into halfway reverse and prepare to take cover back off for gasket and repeat

My assumptions from all of the videos is that when you go into halfway reverse, it puts everything into neutral and positions the reverse fork in a way that you can slide everything out easy. Same thing for putting it all back. Again, I don't think any of it will slide easy, but I could be wrong. I haven't seen a video of someone "sliding it on easy," because I don't think one exists. I think you have to use two hands (no selfie stick) and work it down on there into position. I hope I'm wrong, but I think it is going to take some work. If there is a video out there of someone putting the cover on easy, I'd like to see it.

The forks looked a little beat up, but she seems to drive like she always did.  The shifter isn't as sloppy, thanks to the new crush/roll pins from Harbor Freight.
