Black chunks from tail pipe?

please help, I just bought this 85 Chevy and now I'm having issues with it cutting out and black chunks of crap coming from the tail pipe. Any suggestions would be very appreciated

nothing from the engine should be making it past the cat. that being said it sounds like crap is breaking loose from the cat and could be the source of all your problems
