front fenders
« on: August 02, 2005, 10:07:00 pm »
I'm gonna sand down my front fenders and drop them off at the body shop to get primed and painted. My ? is do i need to get all the paint off the fenders down to bare metal or do they just need to be roughed up? I'm sanding them myself because my buddy is painting them for nothing it'll be quicker if there all prepped. - Dennis

P.S.- he's on vaca this week and i'm gonna have them ready for him on monday

I paint for a living. I'd appreciate it if I got a completely stripped piece to work with if I was doing it for free.  Your buddy will be able to work quicker from bare and doesn't have to wonder what may be lurking under your existing paint.  Smoothing it all out is also easier when you don't have old paint lines in addition to a bunch of other things to work around.  But better to ask him a) how he wants them, b) what does he have time for and c) will he let you use his facilities if you provide the albow grease?

i second that one. i do custom paintjobs and its a rarity that anyone would take anything to the metal for you, but does increase the patience factor alot. but i would also suggest ask the painter first, because you never know, what you might think is helping could be hurting in his opinion.
