Got a new truck recently 1984 Gmc high Sierra 2wd
« on: June 03, 2016, 02:31:33 pm »
So new to the forum obviously , figured I'd finally joined since I've been pouring through lots of good info on here.

I picked up a 1984 Gmc High Sierra
I paid 950 + tax at a car lot.... Yeah it was a trade in...

I bought it sight unseen due to the type of truck it is , and knowing the car lot owner. I did see a couple photos. I was pleasantly surprised with eng/ drivetrain , but dissapointed with the body. I live in Indiana so needless to say it's rusty.... And on top of that it has some sheety body work done to it. In the pictures the cab looked solid as could be! I soon found out it had patch panels riveted "over" the bad spots ( rockers, cab corners , door skin bottoms )
I was pretty flippin bummed. I hate rust , hate Indiana cars .... I dream of living somewhere where cars don't rust. But on the bright side the truck runs and handles amazingly! New ac delco shocks all around , swaybar bushings, new brake lines , couple new ball joints .... True dual exhaust with twin flow masters and side exhaust...

Then the engine.
So I deciphered the vin on the engine
It's a tbx 4 bolt main , came out of either a bus , van , c20 etc... They list it as a 255 hp engine stock .
Someone has added Hedman long tube headers , Weiand intake mani , a rather new looking quadrajet 4 barrel carb , new HEI distributor , and some chrome add ons - valve covers, aid filter, radiator neck etc...
It's also cammed but the P/O could only tell me it was an Rv cam ? It lopes something decent though.
He said he built the engine with old race car parts he had laying around his shop... I'm not sure wth kind of cars he would have raced....I got his name from the title work , googled him and called him to see what all was done with the truck.

So anyway I'm happy with the truck ... I love it , it's a square body gm after all right ? I will just search for a better body.

I also deciphered all the rpo codes and it did come with some cool options. Everything works too!

Welcome to the community and congratulations on the new truck. The body can be fixed but having a mechanically sound truck makes doing all that body work a lot easier to justify!

Welcome from California. Is it possible to see some pictures?
