Inline fuel filter cans look cheap and cheesy and they usually leak.
Put a 10 micron spin on fuel filter down on the RH frame rail just after the dual tank valve or, on a single tank truck, where the tank valve would be. The factory filter in the carb becomes your second line of defense. Baldwin and WIX make spin on fuel and lube filter mounts for not much money.
Properly installed the spin on filters do not leak and they are very easy to service when you're doing an oil change. Maybe every 20,000-30,000 miles or 2 years. A sheet metal guard is pretty easy to fab if you can't get it tucked far enough up to suit you.
I did my 76 6.5L Diesel conversion with a Racor 645 with a 10 micron element on the RH frame rail that I liberated from a Ford F600 dump truck with a CAT engine. The stock 1998 top loading Stanadyne Filter Manager on the back of my intake is a 5 micron secondary filter now.
